An Examination into Java in a Year

Professor A.W.H (Bill) Phillips with Phillip's Machine c1958-67 by LSE Library

In the future, you don’t need roads and Starbucks has replaced every corner gas station with its over-priced drinks with names like caramel monkey-butt-ado. This strange, ugly, rusty, 1988 VW Scirocco does sort of have the Delorian shape Doc Brown prefers.

The car is nicknamed the Car-puccino and is allegedly powered by coffee beans. The creators of the vehicle plan to drive it 210 miles from Manchester to London with power only from coffee granules. The vehicle was built by a team from a BBC TV show called Bang Goes The Theory.

According to the design team, the car will travel three miles per kilogram of ground coffee. If we are basing the 56 espressos per mile that DailyMail estimates the trip will take on Starbucks pricing, this will be one seriously expensive trip. The total journey based on UK coffee prices will cost about 50 times what it would cost in gas. I figure the only by prodcut the coffee fuel will produce is jittery drivers.

Point: As my fellow Jalopnik readers would agree, the thought of an au-to-MO-bile running on some coffee beans is equally laughable and insulting. Counterpoint: As my fellow coffee drinkers would agree, this is an utter disgrace to our holy bean.

Countercounterpoint: Carpuccino? Really?

A while ago we read that coffee-based biofuels were feasible. Knowing the internet as we do, we figured it was only a matter of time before somebody took that novel possibility and turned it into an absurd reality. We were right! The Carpuccino, a 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco modified to run on ground coffee, will drive 337km between Manchester and London in the coming weeks.

The trip will require over 68kg of coffee, with the car getting a mileage of roughly five km per kilogram. The vehicle can hit speeds of 100kph, though the trip could take as long as ten hours, as the car has to stop every 100km to clean out its coffee filters (seriously).

The joke on wheels was built by the BBC1 show Bang Goes The Theory as a reminder that unconventional fuels can power vehicles. Sidebar: the Carpuccino’s trip will cost up to 50 times as much as it would if it were running on gas.

All that being said, I think we can agree to set aside whatever qualms we may have with the Carpuccino in light of its similarities, aesthetic and otherwise, to Doc Brown’s Mr. Fusion-equipped Delorean from Back to the Future II.

Espresso? Where we're going we don't need espresso. [Daily Mail via Green Diary]

Since moving to New York in 2007, I have been following with somewhat obsessive interest the spread of good coffee across the city. By good coffee I suppose I mainly mean good espresso, made on a manual machine by people who care. Naturally, this rules out Starbucks, whose turn toward mediocrity became clear with the switch to automatic espresso machines in the early 2000s. I had worked at a Starbucks briefly in 2001, when the company still used high-quality manual machines made by La Marzocco, and was dismayed by this change, which seemed to convey the company's lack of faith in its baristas to do anything subtler than press buttons. Of course, the result was distinctly inferior coffee. Howard Schultz, the Starbucks CEO generally described these days as “embattled,” appears keen to reverse this trend–which is nice, since he was responsible for it in the first place. I hope he succeeds, as finding a good cappuccino would then be as simple as finding a Senegalese umbrella-peddler in a rainstorm.

But for now, finding the good stuff can still require a little effort. This is especially true if you live in the outer reaches of caffeinated civilization: for example, the far east 80s, where I live. Here on the Upper East Side, we inhabit a virtual coffee desert, the only oases being the expensive and table-service-only (but great) Café Sabarsky at the Neue Galerie, and the expensive and self-satisfied (but at least very Italian) Sant'Ambroeus and Via Quadronno, both in the east 70s.

To the true coffee lover, however, distance is no barrier. For a long time it was enough for me to hear of a good place in some wildly inconvenient neighborhood, and I'd be there. Balzac was apparently the same way, traveling from one corner of Paris to another to get his coffee beans–Mocha Java in this arrondissement, Bourbon (the coffee varietal, not the spirit) in that; he spent hours on these errands. I first got to know certain New York streets and neighborhoods from my espresso-scouting missions: West 20th Street, for example (Café Grumpy), or Alphabet City (the immortal Ninth Street Espresso). A mental map started to emerge, illuminated as if by a caffeinated glow in each of these spots.

Many of the places tended to be downtown. Good espresso bars, like good restaurants, have in recent years congregated below 14th Street, that frontier which seems to separate the hip from the humdrum. The reasons for this clustering effect are fairly clear: downtown one finds more young people, more students, more artists–in short, more people with hours during the day when they don't have to be somewhere. A place like Doma on Perry Street can get so crowded on, say, a Wednesday morning at 11, that one simply can't find a seat. The same goes for places with superior coffee, such as Ninth Street Espresso, or Joe: The Art of Coffee, in its original Waverly Place location, or Jack's Stir-Brew Coffee, around the corner from Joe, on West 10th Street.

There are those from even more caffeinated societies than this one–the Pacific Northwest, or Italy for that matter–who might say New York still has a ways to go in terms of espresso-bar saturation. But it has been cheering to see good coffee make its way up Manhattan island, even in the relatively short time I've lived here. The excellent Joe, run by Jonathan Rubinstein, expanded to Chelsea, then Grand Central (an original and savvy choice), then the Upper West Side, keeping to its high standards in each. There was also the exciting arrival of Stumptown, the outstanding Portland, OR, roaster, in a beautifully appointed space at the Ace Hotel on 29th Street. Perhaps slightly less exalted, but still excellent alternatives to Starbucks, are the midtown espresso bars Zibetto and Fika, and the quality Israeli chain Aroma, on the Upper West Side (there is also a Soho branch). I could go on.

In short, New York, which seldom contents itself with being second-best, has entered a golden period for coffee, one which keeps getting better. Indeed, it seems my own neighborhood, the Upper East Side, may be the only place not getting its fix of good espresso. Is café society doomed to fail in this neighborhood of busy bankers and Pilates-hardened wives? Well, I will continue to take the subway to wherever I need to go for the one true beverage. But would it be too much to hope that some espresso entrepreneur will take pity on our neighborhood in 2010? There might just be a line around the block.

coffee makers

Nicro manual drip coffee maker, very rare 8691b 4x6 by edgarandron

Most baristas (myself included) are working diligently within the realm of third wave coffee, paying close attention to dosing, distribution, tamp, temp, cleanliness, and of course grind. As extraction occurs, we look for flow rate, color, and appropriate volume within approximately a 25-second period. These third wave rudiments are still present in fourth wave extraction, though are allowing the barista to enhance or manipulate flavor profiles, creating an entirely new experience.

Cora Lambert, the director of coffee for New York-based RBC (where one of these fancy machines sits) was kind enough to invite me behind the counter to better acquaint myself with The Slayer.

Upon first gaze, the design alone is mesmerizing. The ergonomics of the machine, reminiscent of the Synesso, provide smooth movements much easier for your body to withstand. The short height of the machine (17 inches) allows ample visibility for the barista and client to connect, creating better relationships. Most ingenious is the thin mirror angled along the grate, giving the barista a perfect view of their shots without moving an inch.

Now that The Slayer and I shook hands and formed our first impressions, I was dying to know more.

As I watched Lambert dose, distribute, tamp, and load the portafilter into the group head, she explained that the machine was equipped with not two, but five boilers all with individual temp control devices, one for each group and two for the steam wands. She then slid the wooden paddle to the left activating the pre-brew, also called pre-infusion, a blooming process for the espresso.

After about 20 seconds of watching the pressure gauge reach approximately four bars she then slid the paddle all the way to the left, or what I like to call at full mast. A succulent reddish-brown syrup started to appear. Its viscosity slowly increased and eventually introduced a blond shade which Lambert noticed and decided to slide the paddle back to the previous setting, what I like to call half-mast, decreasing the pressure to subdue any sour flavors.

Slayer creator Eric Perkunder explains,”if a coffee is too bright you can reduce the effect by moving back to lower pressure at the end of the shot. ” Lambert then halted the extraction at what was clocked at around 50 seconds.

These movements—adjusting the pressure to enhance or subdue specific flavors—are all done manually by the barista. A level of skill is mandatory to understand the subtle nuances of what you are striving for in a flavor profile. But Perkunder's concept of The Slayer lies in the barista's control of the pre-brew.

“The idea and experience that espresso shot flavor benefits from the analog quality of saturation brewing (like a French Press) is the theory behind the machine. That being said the control of this functionality, the timing, the adjusting during the shot, etc is the baristas alone,” he said.

Lambert pulled shot after shot of a Single Origin Ethiopian from Dallis Coffee Roasters located in Queens. “Here, taste this,” she would say, noticeably amped by her caffeine intake for the day.

Street Food Profiles: HubBub Coffee Company in Philadelphia

Note: It's time for another edition of Street Food Profiles. This week we scoot to Philly to meet a former Wall Street trader who started serving Stumptown coffee from a truck parked in University City.

Name: HubBub Coffee
Twitter: @hubbubcoffee
Vendor: Drew Crockett
What's on the menu? Mostly coffee and espresso drinks using Stumptown as well as pastries (croissants, cinnamon rolls, super big chocolate chip cookies and Rice Krispie Treats). Our truck is really about the coffee.

Location and hours? We are located on 38th Street between Locust and Spruce Street in Philadelphia (in University City). We're open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed on Sundays. As the weather gets nicer in the Northeast come spring, we will probably expand our hours.

How long have you been street fooding? We opened in October of 2009 but the idea has been around since 2005. It just took us some time to make the dream a reality.

How has Twitter affected business? It has definitely been a good way to connect with customers and followers and keep them in the loop on what we are up to and what coffees we have. I still think there's much more Twitter potential, but we haven't gotten there yet.

Why a mobile business over brick-and-mortar? I went to college in University City in Philadelphia where street food is part of your normal life as a member of the neighborhood and university community. After college I lived and worked in New York City for four years and was exposed to a whole new level of street food.

I have always been a coffee lover and when I realized you could rig a truck to serve espresso and quality espresso in the right way, my mind immediately thought of my college neighborhood. The area doesn't have very good coffee, let alone good coffee from a truck. So with an idea and some luck, my idea became a reality a few years later.

Who are your typical customers? Coffee is great because it's a social experience, but also a part of many people's daily routine. We get a lot of “regulars” and they are the best! Our typical customers are students, professors, and people from the neighborhood.

Describe a typical day from start to finish. I wake up at 5:15 a.m. take a shower and head down to the truck to fire up the generators. Once they warm up, I turn on the espresso machine and coffeemaker. This takes some time, especially when it's below freezing.

We technically open for business at 7 a.m., but typically have a few customers already before then. I also turn on the music system as soon as I get to the truck. Tunes are key to the whole HubBub experience, whether you are working in the truck or waiting for your cappuccino. Normally we can make any coffee drink you want.

I finish prepping everything (and maybe vacuum or clean countertops if needed) then our baked goods get delivered around 7 a.m. Business begins to pick up around 8 a.m. when our first employee arrives. From there we are rockin' and rollin' until 11 a.m. and also busy between 2 and 4 p.m. At that point, we slowly shut things down for the day. Once students are done with classes, things get pretty quiet and we clean up, prep for the next day (fill up on water, milk, cups, whatever else is low) and head home. Awesome!

What were you doing before this? I worked as a trader at an investment bank in New York City.

What makes your truck so special? Can anything else like it be found in the city? We think that our coffee (Stumptown) is the best, and we want everyone who visits HubBub to leave wanting more. We aim to serve the highest quality coffee and espresso drinks in the most unique environment imaginable—it is about the experience as much as the coffee. We regularly get people hanging out by the truck listening to tunes, talking with friends. The truck has a cafe vibe—and there is nothing like it in Philly.

How would you define “street food”? Simply that: food or drink made and sold on the street. It is the ability to eat or drink from somewhere other than a storefront, but it's also about the experience. Talking with the vendors and waiting in line when it's 30°F out because you are supporting the community. It is taking a food idea that people would never expect to get from a cart or a truck and making it possible.

The best street food city and why. I have heard amazing things about San Francisco, but if I was picking from the cities I have lived in, I would say New York City because of the quality and variety.

Your comfort food after a long day? Pasta. I love anything Italian.

Advice for an aspiring vendor? Persevere. Like starting any kind of business, it can be a very frustrating process, particularly with permits and licenses, but have faith that you have a great idea and dare to be different.

Wizards Tickets Less Valuable Than A Pot Of Coffee

The NBA has an exciting new promotion where fans can earn two free tickets to a Washington home game simply by drinking five cups of Dunkin Donuts coffee. Or save up for a sixth cup….and get another cup of coffee!

Here's an email we got from reader Eric. S:

I was at the Dunkin Donuts outside Verizon this morning getting my daily coffee. When I checked out, they handed me a coupon: “Drink 5 hot beverages, get two tickets to a Wizards Game”. That's right, 5 coffees at Dunkin Donuts will net you TWO free tickets to a Wizards game. So two tickets to a Wizards game is now worth about $10. Compare this to their other promotion where you buy SIX coffees you get a free coffee, it's cheaper to get two Wizards tickets than it is to get free coffee. Truly amazing.

Hmmm. Tough choice. That seventh (FREE!) cup of coffee sounds pretty good, but consider this. If you cash in the ducats, go to the game and Biggie Bagel wins the scoreboard race, your ticket stub could be good for ANOTHER cup of free delicious coffee. Suckers! Look who just saved $1.75 and enjoyed a semi-professional basketball game! Plus all that sweet, sweet coffee.

Man, I've got a headache. I could use some caffeine.

Make a Better Cup of Coffee in Your Hotel Room

Many hotels have coffee makers right in the room, but dumping some grounds in and flipping the switch rarely makes a good cup of Joe. The Atlantic's Jerry Baldwin offers useful tips for improving the brew you make in your hotel room.

The first thing Baldwin does is grab a big bottle of water, preferring to use that over whatever city water happens to flow out of the tap; good water is a key component of great coffee, so he argues there's no reason to be beholden to the inconsistent taste and varying mineral content of tap water.

Don't feel like lugging bottled water all over the place while traveling? No problem:

If I've failed to purchase bottled water, I draw the tap water the night before. This achieves two things: the chlorine will partially evaporate, and the temperature will rise to room temperature. The heaters in coffeemakers will raise the temperature a certain number of degrees. They don't have holding tanks like commercial machines. A twenty-degree difference between newly drawn tap water and room temperature will result in nearly a twenty degree increase in brewing temperature.

There's more to making fantastic hotel coffee than just using good water, so hit up the post for more tips on making good hotel coffee (including how to find a good coffee-to-water ratio). Got a suggestion of your own for making great coffee while you're away from your favorite coffee maker and beans? We'd love to hear them in the comments.

How to choose a right cosmetic dentist

No one likes to have a bad smile on ones face as this not only makes one feel unappealing but also makes one feel low self-esteem. It is always found that those who have a discouraging smile tend to be jealous of all those who have a sparkling smile. Now that everyone wants to have a pearl white smile, the option of getting a smile corrected from a cosmetic surgeon is coming into light. The ones who have broken, chipped, gapped and misplaced teeth are amongst those who have welcomed cosmetic dentistry with both arms. There are many people who have strained, discolored and disease prone teeth and are opting out to get their smile corrected from a cosmetic dentist.

Now that people are taking smile correction as a confidence restoration treatment, there are many dentists who are coming up with specialized cosmetic dentistry treatments. One thing that the prospective patients have to keep in mind is not all the dentists excel in cosmetic dentistry services as this is a parameter on which they should conduct their search.

How to Choose a Right Cosmetic Dentist

The selection of a cosmetic dentist depends on the treatment that one wishes to acquire. The various cosmetic dentistry treatments include tooth whitening, dental binding, porcelain veneers, white filling, invisalign braces, tooth implants and complete mouth re-construction and rejuvenation. Irrespective of the treatment that one wishes to acquire, one must not compromise with the educational qualification and the experience.

The various steps that can be of great use while choosing an appropriate cosmetic dentist are:-

o Verifying the license information o Verifying the various certifications o A glance at the previous patient’s testimonials o Asking the dentist about the total number of years from which he has been practicing o Confirming that only latest and safe equipments are used o Knowing the possible risks and the ill effects of undergoing any particular cosmetic dentistry surgery. o Checking out the before treatment and the after treatment photographs o Determining the cost of the particular treatment o A look at the basic amenities available at the dental hospital or clinic o Confirmation about the emergency care services provided

If one feels that one has received a satisfactory answer to all the above mentioned questions, then one can be rest assured that one has chosen the right cosmetic dentist. If still a prospective patient has any apprehension, then there are lots of other factors that can be of good help in picking the right cosmetic dentist such as interacting with the current patient list and many more.

All these things if kept in mind can help one choose the right doctor and get ones beautiful smile back.

How to Find a Qualified and Professional Dentist?

It is not that finding a qualified and professional dentist is a daunting task like finding a needle in a lot of a haystack. All one requires to do is to refine ones search so that it goes in the right direction. One main factor that decides the selection of a dentist is the readily availability as no one would like to stay in pain while traveling a long distance to the dentist. Not all the dentists have same qualities as this is the decisive factor that creates a gap between great dentists and a normal dentist.

How would anyone know that the dentist is qualified and proficient? The ones who think that the educational qualifications make a dentist professional might be highly mistaken if they pick a wrong one. The resources such as yellow pages and various classified advertisements do not specify that the dentist has the required competence and demonstrates professionalism. Well, the ones who have had a long and useless research for a quality dentist need to go in with the word of mouth factor as the ones who have already dealt with the dentist already shall know better. The dentists recommended by family and friends usually come out to be professional and expert ones.

Another way of finding a qualified and practiced dentist is to surf internet and carry out the search of the dentist present in one’s city or town. To have a glance at any dentist’s services, one can simply visit the website and gather much required information. These days many people prefer to read the reviews given to a dentists by his/ her patients to verify that the services provided are reliable. There are various search engines such as Google, MSN and many more on which one can simply type the name of the city and after that the keyword “dentist” to have a complete list of dentists practicing in that specific area.

Once the list of dentists is in hand, one can try to gather information such as the academic qualification, years of practice and last but not the least the fee charged for each and every service. These factors to a certain extent play a major role in verifying the qualifications and the proficiency level of the dentist. Once the person looking out for a dentist has reached a comfortable level, one can simply go ahead and fix an appointment.

It can be said that via going through both the routes, the word of mouth and the internet one, a person who wants to see a dentist can definitely find an eligible and competent doctor. Both these approaches have helped many and are considered to be quite useful.

What You Need In A Dental Plan

The health of your teeth not only plays a big part in how you feel about your smile, but also a huge part in your overall health. This means that making a habit of looking after your teeth and oral health as early as possible is very important. There are plenty of things you can do at home to improve the conditions of your oral health and a good dentist will help you overcome problems as soon as they arise. If you're hoping for a healthier mouth, you may have considered dental insurance – this is a great way to help you contend with costs in the future.

Most people know the pain of toothache or sore gums, but what they might not know is that unhealthy teeth can have a much greater effect on your well-being. For example, periodontal disease (gum disease) can cause a whole host of problems if left untreated – including heart attack, stroke, diabetes, pancreatic cancer, respiratory disease and digestive disorders. The good news is that looking after your teeth means that your body can fight the bacteria that cause everything from minor decay to full-blown gingivitis (gum disease).

This means that prevention is one of the most effective tools in battling teeth related health problems. Because looking after your teeth well is the best way to avoid problems, it's important to keep up regular trips to the dentist – this means that if you're looking for a dental plan you want to ensure that you choose one that helps you with preventative dental costs.

If you can find a dental insurance plan to help you cover the cost of diagnostic treatments such as two dental examinations and cleanings a year as well as bite wing x-rays once a year and full mouth x-rays once every three years you'll be on the right track.

Brushing your teeth twice a day, using floss and mouthwash, are essential first steps to keeping your mouth in peak condition, but to keep your teeth entirely free of bacteria you need to visit your dentist and hygienist regularly. Treatments like these you can plan for and ensure you have the money or insurance to cover, however, it's also important that your dentist plan covers you for emergency reparative work. You need your dental insurance to look after you when you need it most, and sometimes this is when you suffer an unforeseen dental emergency.

Make sure you consider both aspects of your dental health – preventative and restorative cover – when you are considering a dental plan and you'll be in a good position to preserve the health of your teeth for the future.

Finding a Local Concord Dentist You can Trust

Trust in a dentist is often a hard thing to find. However, whether or not you're just looking for a regular checkup or something more serious like surgery or a root canal, you can get it all and at a reasonable cost too. Times now a days are pretty difficult, and there are a ton of people that are choosing to not bother going to the dentist because it seems like a waste of money or something they don't need right now. The thing of it is, though, is that this is something that will cost people a lot more money down the road the longer they put off going to the dentist.

If you're always putting off going to the dentist then the problems you might have, like a tiny cavity for example, can become something very serious, painful, and costly. Your teeth are one of the things that need constant care, because if you put off taking care of a small dental problem, its going to grow into something that you can't fix without a lot of time, pain, and money. Many times when a person hasn't seen a dentist for a very long stretch of time and then they go back, what they find is that they have numerous cavities. Sometimes more than just 3 or 4. Once they go to the dentist with all of these cavities a lot of those teeth are very likely going to need root canals. If you're unaware, root canals are extremely expensive, usually being into the 4 figure range just for one of them. To make a long story short, visit concord dentists on a regular basis and you'll be fine. Otherwise, things could turn out badly.

If you find the right concord dentistry, they'll be able to take very good care of your teeth. Always be sure to read as many reviews as you possibly can about your local dentist before choosing one to make sure that you decide on the right one. A good local dentist will usually have the most recent and efficient dental machines, have knowledgeable staff, and have up to date dental procedures to make sure that you receive the best, most up to date dental care available anywhere.
